CHM 215: Organic Chemistry 2013

Course Description

This course provides a basic introduction to organic functional groups such as alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatic compounds, stereochemistry, alkyl halides, aldehydes, ketones, alcohols, phenols, aryl halides, ethers, carboxylic acids and their derivatives, amines, diazonium salts, carbohydrate and polymer. It also covers the study of nomenclature, structure, physical and chemical properties, chemical reactivity, stereochemistry, synthesis, reaction mechanism, and spectroscopy.

Objectives After taking this course, students should:

be able to explain the basic physical and chemical properties of each mentioned functional groups.
be able to assign the correct nomenclature and stereochemistry of each mentioned chemical structures and relating structures.
be able to predict the product out come from chemical reaction based on mechanism and chemical reactivity.
be familiar with the application of spectroscopy for chemical analysis.

Teaching Methods

Give lectures based on the text books by explanation, writing on paper or presenting via PowerPoint. Questions and answers in class. Use computer program to visualize some concepts.
